Virtual Gothenburg Lab

A new initiative called Virtual Gothenburg Lab will create a unique opportunity for the testing and development of work approaches, tools and methods for visual, digital and virtual work. Virtual Gothenburg Lab is connected to Virtuella Göteborg, the city's digital twin, and supports the City of Gothenburg's urban development, thus allowing it to serve as an impetus for change.

Workshop with Virtual Gothenburg Lab

The virtual environment will be a reflection of the physical environment and can connect information that describes the city. It will be possible to use Virtual Gothenburg for, purposes such as planning and the discussion of urban development and future innovations within the city.

Virtual Gothenburg Lab is managed by Visual Arena at Lindholmen Science Park and by the City of Gothenburg, with strong representation from the business community, academia and regional stakeholders. This ensures a stable foundation with respect to how a town’s digital twin can be used and shaped.

Virtual Gothenburg Lab is made possible thanks to financing from Sweden’s innovation agency Vinnova and the combined efforts of the public sector, the commercial sector and academia. Together with the Digital Twin City Centre at Chalmers and its work on Virtuella Göteborg, Sweden now has the opportunity to become a world leader in digital twin towns. These initiatives approach the same target area from different perspectives, together producing greater benefits.

What is a test bed?

Vinnova, the Swedish innovation authority, aims to strengthen Sweden’s ability to innovate, working to strengthen the environment for test beds in Sweden. The objective is to increase companies’ and organisations’ awareness about the available environments.

Vinnova’s definition of “test bed” is a physical or virtual environment within one or multiple public stakeholders. They are places where companies, non-profit organisations, academia, institutions and other organisations can collaborate in the development, testing and introduction of products, services and processes or organisational solutions.
