A new phase of the Narrative VR Lab

Thursday, November 5, 2020

Region Västra Götaland has given the go-ahead for further funding for the Visual Arena project Narrative VR Lab, which means that a third phase of the lab can begin. Together with the other project partners, we will now be able to offer new places to XR creators, plus further workshops and presentations.

Narrative VR Lab is a project aimed at creative people who want to make use of the innovative visualisation media that make up XR from a narrative perspective. The lab provides guidance, matchmaking services, process support, workshops, presentations and a sum of money. Everyone in Region Västra Götaland and Region Halland is eligible to apply to the lab.

- The lab is a badly needed first step in the process of creating a work, because it provides support and an outlet. We are very pleased that artists and creative people from all disciplines are taking part in this venture, says project leader Gorki Glaser-Müller.

The third phase is starting now

During the two previous phases of the project (2018 to 2019), most of the people who applied to the lab were artists. Sara Tirelli, who created the Medusa prototype in the 2018 phase, continued to develop it after the end of the lab. She obtained further funding and transformed it into a work that was included in an exhibition at Borås Art Museum and was then exhibited in Venice. Now the go-ahead has been given for the third phase of the lab.

Unique lab for testing ideas

There is a widespread need for the lab, because there are no cultural spaces available where creative people have the opportunity to learn and try out their ideas and media.

- The lab is based on a progressive idea and people can come there to test their ideas and create prototypes. People who are interested from a public perspective also have the opportunity to experiment. No one else is doing anything like this – it's unique. The lab can provide solutions and opportunities to meet this need, continues Gorki.

The lab offers an arena for investigating these media in relation to art and culture. The bar for entry is set very low and participants can be first-time users of XR. The requirement for applying to the lab is an artistic idea based on a narrative that aims to explain or convey information. However, it must be feasible and reasonable. It is the idea for the prototype that is evaluated.

- At Narrative VR Lab, we provide support for visionary people who can turn their visions into reality with the help of technical solutions. I hope that as many people as possible will feel able to try out their ideas. No one should be shy or wary of the new technical solutions. It's all just technology until someone has put their mark on it and turned it into something that other people can experience. We are establishing the frameworks and rules for how we will experience culture and art in the future. Come and work on your pilot project and become part of history! says Gorki.

Would you like to take part?

An announcement will soon be made about how many places the lab can offer, how much money is available for each project and which workshops and presentations will be held.
