New research project will visualize air quality through environmental data

Monday, October 15, 2018

The research project “Visualisering och modellering av urban luftkvalitet - påverkan av vegetation, bebyggelsestruktur och trafikemissioner” (“Visualization and modeling of urban air quality – the effect of vegetation, housing structures and traffic emissions”) is one of the projects that has been granted significant financial support from Formas. Chalmers/GU, University of Gothenburg and IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute will run the project collaboratively. Together they will address the question of how densification, urban vegetation and traffic affect air quality.

An important part of this project is finding a way to visualize environmental data for better communication and increased understanding among citizens, city planners and others who work with urban environments.

This work includes developing, through modern visualization and communication techniques, tools for digital visualization of model results to represent the urban landscape and for communication with the general public, for education and as tools in city planning.

The “Visualization and modeling of urban air quality – the effect of vegetation, housing structures and traffic emissions” project is a collaboration between Chalmers, University of Gothenburg, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute AB and Visual Arena. The project manager is Håkan Pleijel at the Institution for Biology and Environmental Science, GU. Estimated project period: October 1, 2018 - September 30, 2021
