City Skyline
The pilot project was led by HiQ with Gothenburg City Planning Office as the needs owner and Atgis, Berge, Gothenburg Region, Insert Coin and RISE as partners.
How will the city’s skyline be changed?
As one of the sub-pilots in Virtual Gothenburg Lab, we looked at how game engines could strengthen the dialogue between developers and the Gothenburg City Planning Authority in their task to harmonise the past and future urban landscape.
Challenge
How can game engines enable early crash testing between adjacent projects from multiple developers and other elements of the long-term urban plan?
Solution
UX prototypes were built in two different game engines, Unity and Unreal, and tested in web-based workshops between Gothenburg City Planning Authority and the developers. The prototypes provide the opportunity to preview the urban landscape with various proposed buildings at different angles and scroll through a timeline up to the year 2050. The possibility of co-creating simpler block models was also evaluated.
The Result
The solution was perceived as a good shortcut to a collaborative dialogue and radical time saving during the planning process. The importance of a stripped-down and simple user experience was emphasised.
Opportunities ahead
Automate chains between simulation programs and game engines.
