WORKING ON MARS

Using Virtual and Mixed Reality to enable geologists to explore Mars.

Mars rovers have landed on Mars and traversed the landscape, allowing planetary geologists and other researchers to explore the surface of a planet so distant that even radio signals take many minutes to arrive. These are not driven by one driver with a joystick. Instead there are controlled by a committee of many researchers and engineers.

How can these teams drive these rovers under these circumstances? Can they achieve a presence similar to a geologist surveying the field on Earth? NASA is now investigating how mixed reality using Microsoft’s HoloLens can help researchers drive these rovers. But have this been solved before HoloLens, and if so how?

Thommy Eriksson is a Ph. D. at the Department of Applied IT (Chalmers University of Technology) within the field of digital representation. In his research he studies digital media within the fields of interaction design, mixed reality development, learning management systems and using video in higher education.
