Where does the Gothenburg Region stand in the latest AR & VR development trends?

Thursday, February 28, 2019

In western Sweden and the Gothenburg Region, the sector for AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) has shown enormous growth. Business Region Göteborg studied how this field has expanded and how new technologies have developed and chose to present the results in a seminar at Visual Arena.

The study shows that western Sweden and the Gothenburg Region are growing in terms of use and development within AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality). This is driven by a cluster of around 100 companies in the region, primarily in the life science and automotive sectors. Gaming, entertainment and education are also major areas that are growing. In addition to companies, the study also describes the ecosystem and the latest trends in the field.

'AR/VR has been overrated at times, but now the third wave is under way and I believe it will be for real this time,' says Erik Behm, Area & Investment Manager ICT at Business Region Göteborg.

'For example, we can see a high level of innovation and new ideas from life science, including everything from visualisation of difficult operations to exposure therapy with the aid of virtual reality and augmented reality. The biggest growth among beginners is in gaming, where new and easy-to-use technology makes it accessible for new ideas to become reality,' continues Erik.

The study has been conducted by the consulting company Haw&Co and presented at Visual Arena by Johan Hogsved, Haw&Co and about a dozen AR/VR companies from the Gothenburg Region.
